New Details in Ongoing Standoff Between AZHBPA and Turf Paradise

The latest missive in an ongoing game of epistolary ping-pong between the Arizona horsemen and Turf Paradise management has seen the track re-affirm their proposal to stage a race-meet this winter. ... the proposal comes with caveats. The first is a previously stated desire: That the $2.1 million the Arizona Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (AZHBPA) moved from the Turf Paradise horseman’s account into its own account be returned.

[A letter from TuP to horsemen] said, in essence, if you want us to open Turf Paradise for an abbreviated race meeting in 2021, you'll have to find another organization besides the Arizona Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association to represent you. Either that, or the current board and executive director of the Arizona HBPA can resign, and then we'll consider opening for a live meet in January.

“Simms is trying to do the same thing with the horsemen that he did with the racing commission a while ago: divide and conquer,” said Robert Hutton, president of the Arizona HBPA. “His move to get rid of the HBPA is because he doesn't want anyone holding him to a standard.”

Racinos seek major expansion of gambling in NM

New Mexico’s horse racetracks and racinos are proposing a sweeping expansion in their state-regulated gambling, including internet gaming and 24-hour casino operations. In addition, according to draft legislation obtained by the Journal, the state’s five racetrack casinos would be allowed to have an unlimited number of video slot machines, table games and on-site sports betting parlors.

Marquis Downs cancels remainder of 2020 season

All bets are off for the 2020 season of thoroughbred racing at Marquis Downs. On its website, Marquis Downs says the decision was made with the safety of both staff and patrons in mind amid the COVID-19 pandemic. An earlier announcement indicated the first part of the season would be cancelled up until July.

Thanks for the memories, Yellowstone Downs

The spacious MetraPark grandstand, overlooking the horse-racing track formally known as Yellowstone Downs, is scheduled to be demolished soon. It will truly be a sad moment for me when that part of the crumbling racing facility officially bites the dust. Crashing down with it will be any hopes of reviving the popular sport locally.
