Grants Pass Downs is putting a pause on opening week, because of the smoke from wildfires. A representative for the organization says training exercises are put on hold for now, in the hopes rain is in the forecast soon.
Grants Pass Downs kicks off today’s summer racing season with an eight-race opening day schedule featuring the Shady Cove Stakes, with a full field of 10 thoroughbreds running for a $12,000 purse five-furlong distance away. The meeting will feature more than 80 races scheduled for nine dates – June 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and July 1, 6 , 7 and 8 – with $60,000 in purses available per day.
Grants Pass Downs' management has announced it will open the backside of the southwest Oregon track May 15. The dates of May 15-17 will be used for shipping horses in and getting barns, stalls, and hot walkers, etc., ready for training and racing. The first official training day will be May 18.
