How successful was Sunday’s first day of thoroughbred horse racing at Century Mile? It was so successful that the purse for the 90th Canadian Derby Aug. 18 at the Airport City track just jumped from $150,000 to $250,000 with the express intention of returning it to its previous status as the richest race in Western Canada in addition to now becoming the only mile track west of Woodbine. "The Century Mile Racetrack and Casino in Leduc County held its official opening Monday, with speeches, champagne toasts and a tour of the new state-of-the art facility. The $61.5-million Century Mile Entertainment Centre, at 4711 Airport Perimeter Rd., features a race track, gambling areas and a grandstand building."
