Hold your horses: Alberta court to review disqualification in Canadian Derby

A fight over which horse won a Canadian Derby race in Edmonton two years ago is to be heard in court this week. Queen’s Bench Justice June Ross is to look at the results of the Aug. 19, 2017, race at Northland’s Park. Chief Know It All was originally declared the winner despite a complaint from the owner of another horse it allegedly fouled. Ten months later, the Horse Racing Appeal Tribunal disqualified Chief Know It All and named two other horses, Double Bear and Trooper John, as co-winners.

JONES: Century Mile off to the races with major opening weekend

How successful was Sunday’s first day of thoroughbred horse racing at Century Mile? It was so successful that the purse for the 90th Canadian Derby Aug. 18 at the Airport City track just jumped from $150,000 to $250,000 with the express intention of returning it to its previous status as the richest race in Western Canada in addition to now becoming the only mile track west of Woodbine. Overnight.

Century Mile racetrack opens, with new season just four weeks away

"The Century Mile Racetrack and Casino in Leduc County held its official opening Monday, with speeches, champagne toasts and a tour of the new state-of-the art facility. The $61.5-million Century Mile Entertainment Centre, at 4711 Airport Perimeter Rd., features a race track, gambling areas and a grandstand building."

"Racing season is scheduled to start April 28, with thoroughbreds racing for the first time on the Century Mile track."
